Ramadan is the most spiritually charged window to go. The reward of an Umrah performed in Ramadan is described in hadith as carrying the reward of Hajj in merit, and the atmosphere in the Haram during the last ten nights is genuinely beyond words. But here is the catch: prices are significantly higher and the Haram is at peak capacity. Book Ramadan Umrah packages at least four to six months ahead (and for the last ten nights, book as early as you possibly can). Both of you need: Comfortable walking shoes (you cover several kilometres daily and your feet will tell the difference), reusable water bottles (staying hydrated in the heat is not something to improvise), unscented travel-sized toiletries (scented products are not permitted in Ihram), a portable prayer mat, any prescription medications with a translated doctor’s letter, and healthy snacks for long prayer sessions.
For him: Two sets of Ihram cloth and a secure money belt.
For her: Several modest abayas and headscarves and comfortable flat sandals she has already broken in at home (new shoes and long Tawaf circuits are a bad combination) and a small crossbody bag for essentials during Tawaf.
Perform Tawaf and Sa’i in the early hours after Fajr or late at night after Isha. Both windows are cooler and noticeably less crowded. Avoid the period directly after Friday Jumu’ah prayers if you want a calmer experience. Drink water constantly and use the shade canopies along the Masa’a whenever you need to pause.
