Laylatul Qadr falls within the last 10 nights of Ramadan, most likely on an odd night (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th). Spend those nights in Tarawih and Tahajjud prayer, reciting the Quran, making the masnoon dua, seeking forgiveness, and giving charity. In Makkah, every act of worship is multiplied. Treat all five odd nights as Laylatul Qadr, not just the 27th.
We put this guide together for Muslims planning their Ramadan Umrah, so you walk into those nights knowing what to do, why it matters, and how to pace yourself when tiredness (and it will come) tries to pull you to sleep.
What Laylatul Qadr Actually Is
Laylatul Qadr translates as the Night of Decree, or the Night of Power. It is the night the Quran was first sent down from Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz (the Preserved Tablet) to the lowest heaven, beginning the revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
But here is what makes it unlike anything else in the Islamic calendar. Allah (SWT) tells us directly, in the Quran, that this one night carries more reward than 1,000 months of worship. That is 83 years and 4 months. For most of us, that is longer than our entire lives.
One sincere night, in the right place, with the right intention, and you could earn what others take a lifetime to accumulate. That is not an exaggeration. That is the Quran.
The Surah Allah Revealed About Laylatul Qadr
Allah (SWT) dedicated a full Surah to Laylatul Qadr. Read it carefully, and let it settle.
Inna anzalnahu fee laylatil qadr. Wa maa adraka maa laylatul qadr. Laylatul qadri khayrun min alfi shahr. Tanazzalul malaa’ikatu war roohu feeha bi idhni rabbihim min kulli amr. Salamun hiya hattaa matla’il fajr.
“Indeed, We sent it (the Quran) down on the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is, until the emergence of dawn.”
(Surah Al-Qadr, 97:1-5)
That last line is worth sitting with: “Peace it is, until the emergence of dawn.” From Maghrib to Fajr, angels are descending and divine peace fills the earth. If you are in Makkah on that night, you are standing right at the centre of it.
When Is Laylatul Qadr in Ramadan 2027
Ramadan 2027 is predicted to begin on 8 February 2027 in the UK (subject to moon sighting). That places the last 10 nights starting around 27 February 2027. The five odd nights to protect in your schedule are the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th of Ramadan.
The 27th night (around 6 March 2027) is the one most communities mark as the most likely. But the Prophetic guidance is clear: do not gamble on one night.
Aisha (RA) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.” Reported in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
He did not say “the 27th night.” He said the odd nights, plural. Plan accordingly.
How to Spend Laylatul Qadr: Hour by Hour
You do not need a complicated schedule. You need a realistic one. Here is how to move through the night with purpose, starting from Iftar and ending at Fajr.
From Iftar to Isha
Break your fast lightly. This is not the night to overeat and feel heavy through Tarawih. A few dates, water, and a small meal is enough (most pilgrims in Makkah find this easier because the food options right outside the Haram are accessible and quick).
Take a shower before heading to Masjid al-Haram. Wear clean clothes and apply some perfume. These are small acts, and they carry real intention behind them. You are presenting yourself before Allah in the best state you can manage.
Make your niyyah (intention) clearly in your heart before you step out. You are not just attending a prayer. You are seeking the most significant night of the year.
Tarawih: Do Not Rush It
Tarawih in Masjid al-Haram during the last 10 nights is unlike anything you will experience at home. The recitation is long and slow and moves you even if you do not understand Arabic. Stand with full attention.
Pray each rak’ah with khushu (inner humility). If your mind wanders, gently bring it back. Do not count the rak’ahs like a checklist. Focus on what is being recited and try to feel the words even slightly.
Between Prayers: Quran and Dhikr
After Tarawih, do not go back to the hotel. This is where many pilgrims lose the night.
Find a spot in the Haram, open your Quran, and read. Even a few pages, read slowly with reflection, are worth more than rushing through juz after juz without presence. On top of that, fill the gaps with simple dhikr: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, and Astaghfirullah. These take no energy and the rewards on this night are immeasurable.
Tahajjud: The Heart of the Night
Wake before Fajr (most mosques in Makkah organise Tahajjud in jama’ah during the last 10 nights). Pray at least two rak’ahs, as many as you can manage. This is the time the doors of mercy are wide open.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of the night and says: Who is calling upon Me so that I may answer him?” Reported in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. You are in Makkah. In the Haram. At Tahajjud. Call upon Him.
Dua: The One the Prophet Taught
When Aisha (RA) asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) what she should say if she found Laylatul Qadr, he did not give her a long list of supplications. He gave her seven words.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni
“O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love to forgive, so forgive me.”
(Reported in Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith 3513, and declared authentic)
Repeat this throughout the night. Repeat it quietly. Repeat it with meaning. The word ‘afw in Arabic does not just mean forgiveness, it means to wipe clean, as if the sin never existed. That is what you are asking for on this night.
Structure Your Dua Properly
When you make personal dua (especially in Tahajjud), follow this order:
- Begin by praising Allah (say Alhamdulillah, acknowledge His greatness)
- Send salutations on the Prophet (Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad)
- Ask for yourself first (your forgiveness, your family, your needs)
- Then make dua for your family, your loved ones, and the wider Ummah
And ask with certainty. Not with “maybe if You want.” Ask as someone who knows Allah is listening and loves to give.
Give Charity on These Nights
Do not overlook sadaqah. Giving charity on Laylatul Qadr multiplies the reward of that gift by the weight of 1,000 months. Even a small amount, given with sincerity, carries enormous worth on this night. You can donate to a cause you trust before sleeping or set up a recurring donation specifically for the odd nights.
Rest Without Guilt
Take short naps during the day (after Dhuhr is ideal). You cannot sustain five full nights of ibadah on empty. Pacing yourself is not laziness. It is wisdom. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself advised balance, and collapsing after night one helps no one.
Being in Makkah Changes Everything
Praying inside Masjid al-Haram carries a reward 100,000 times greater than praying anywhere else. Now place that on top of Laylatul Qadr, a night that is worth more than 83 years of worship. The combination is something no calculation can fully capture.
But only if you are prepared for what Makkah during the last 10 nights actually looks like.
What Nobody Tells You About the Last 10 Nights in Makkah
The crowds are extraordinary. Millions of pilgrims gather at Masjid al-Haram during the final days of Ramadan, and the atmosphere is electric and overwhelming at the same time. Tawaf, moving between floors, finding a spot for prayer, and even getting back to your hotel can take far longer than you expect.
That is not a reason to stay away. It is a reason to plan well before you arrive.
Practical Tips for Umrah Pilgrims in the Last 10 Nights in Ramadan
Arrive early for every prayer. Head to the Haram well before Asr time and settle in before crowds build. Once you are inside and have your spot, protect it gently and patiently.
Do your Umrah in the first days of Ramadan if possible. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah advises pilgrims to limit Umrah to once during the last 10 nights due to the sheer volume of people. Performing it in the first or middle 10 days means you arrive at the last 10 nights free to focus entirely on ibadah.
Perform Nafl Tawaf on these nights. If you can access the Mataf (the Tawaf area), circling the Kaaba during the last 10 nights and especially on Laylatul Qadr is an act of worship with enormous reward. Even a single round of Tawaf on this night, made with full presence, is unlike anything else.
Use the outer areas of the Haram calmly. You do not need to be directly in front of the Kaaba to receive the reward of praying in Masjid al-Haram. The entire mosque complex counts, and the outer expansion areas are quieter, easier to find space in, and have accessible restrooms and water nearby.
Book accommodation close to the Haram. The shorter the walk, the less energy you spend on logistics and the more you preserve for ibadah. When we at Ziyuf Al Rahman arrange Ramadan Umrah packages, we prioritise hotels within five minutes of the Haram gates for exactly this reason.
Use public transport. Saudi authorities have made this a formal recommendation during the last 10 nights. Private taxis in Makkah during peak Ramadan can add 45 minutes to a 10-minute journey. Save the energy.
Mistakes That Cost Pilgrims the Night
- Overeating at Iftar. Heavy food leads to heavy limbs by Isha. Keep it light and eat properly after Tarawih.
- Staying up the first odd night and crashing for the rest. Space your energy. All five odd nights matter.
- Spending the night on your phone. You are in Makkah. The group chat can wait until after Fajr.
- Missing Tahajjud to sleep. Set an alarm. Even two rak’ahs before Fajr on Laylatul Qadr is better than the whole night elsewhere.
- Waiting for a “feeling” to confirm it is the night. Some people experience signs, most do not. Worship regardless.
