Planning Umrah in the Christmas Holidays? Here is What UK Muslims Need to Know

Table Of Content

UK Muslims can perform Umrah during the Christmas holidays 2026 by travelling between approximately 20 December and 3 January. Makkah’s temperature in December averages 26°C by day and 17°C at night, making rituals physically comfortable. With schools closed and most workplaces quieter, it is the single most convenient travel window of the year for British Muslim families.

We have helped hundreds of UK Muslim families make exactly this decision, and what they all say afterwards is the same: “Why did we wait so long?” This guide answers every question you have right now, practically and spiritually, so you can book with confidence.

Why Christmas Holidays 2026 Work So Well for Umrah

You do not need to take extra annual leave. That alone makes it stand out from every other time of year.

UK state school Christmas holidays typically run from around 20 December to early January. That is a clean 10 to 14-day window, and a standard Umrah trip from the UK runs between 7 and 14 days. The timing fits almost perfectly.

Here is what makes this window practical:

    • Children are off school, so no missed lessons or catch-up stress
    • Many employers slow down over this period, making additional leave easier to approve
    • Flights from Manchester, Birmingham, and London Heathrow to Jeddah run regularly through December
    • Extended family (grandparents, siblings, cousins) can travel together without clashing schedules
    • You return before the new year, spiritually refreshed and ready

But here is the catch most people miss: December flights and hotel rooms near the Haram fill up fast. UK Muslim families are not the only ones with this idea. Book early or pay significantly more.

What Is Makkah Like in December?

Honestly, December is one of the best months to be there.

The heat that makes summer Umrah so physically demanding is simply not present. Daytime sits around 26°C and nights drop to around 17°C. Humidity is low and rainfall is rare during this period.

For older pilgrims or young children doing their first Umrah, that cooler air changes everything. Tawaf (the seven circuits of the Ka’bah) and Sa’i (the seven walks between Safa and Marwa) become far more manageable when you are not battling 40-degree heat.

December in Makkah at a glance:

    ConditionAverage in December
    Daytime high26°C
    Night-time low17°C
    RainfallVery low (dry season)
    HumidityLow to moderate

Wear light layers. The Masjid al-Haram is air-conditioned, and nights outside can feel cool after a UK winter, so a light jacket for evenings is worth packing.

The Spiritual Reason This Time Matters

Umrah has no fixed Gregorian date. You can perform it any time of year, outside of Hajj days. That freedom is part of its beauty.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Umrah to Umrah is an expiation for what is between them,” reported in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Every minor sin committed between two Umrahs is wiped clean. That reward does not expire in December.

And practically speaking, using a period when your family is already together, already free, and already in a reflective mindset (the end of a year tends to do that) is about as sensible as it gets.

How to Plan Your Christmas Umrah from the UK

Start earlier than you think you need to. That is the single most important piece of advice we can give.

December is the busiest Umrah season for UK families. Packages from Manchester, Birmingham, and London fill up fast, and by October the better hotel options near the Haram are already gone.

Work through these steps in order and you will not miss anything.

    1. Lock in your dates first
Check the school holiday calendar and decide your departure window. Most UK families travel between 20 December and 2 January. Build in at least seven nights in Makkah and add Madinah if your schedule allows.

    2. Check your passport and apply for your visa
Every traveller needs a passport valid for at least six months. Umrah visas are issued through licensed UK travel agents and take roughly 5 to 10 working days to process. Apply at least three weeks before you fly, not three days.

    3. Book an ATOL-protected package
Choose a package that includes flights, accommodation, and ground transfers. And pay close attention to hotel distance from the Masjid al-Haram. A room 800 metres away sounds manageable until you are walking to Fajr before sunrise in the cold air.

    4. Get your meningitis vaccination
Saudi authorities require a valid meningitis ACWY jab for all pilgrims. Book with your GP at least six weeks before departure, especially if travelling with children or elderly family members.

    5. Prepare the rituals before you travel
We cover the full ritual sequence below. Arriving without knowing the Talbiyah or the order of acts creates confusion at a moment that deserves full presence. You can also download the guide How to Perform Umrah: A complete Guide.

The Four Acts of Umrah: What You Actually Do

Umrah has four core acts. Learn them now, not at the Miqat.

    Ihram: Entering the Sacred State

Men wear two unstitched white cloths. Women dress modestly as normal, with face and hands uncovered. You make your intention (niyyah) for Umrah at the Miqat boundary. For most UK pilgrims flying into Jeddah, that is Juhfah (also called Rabigh).

Here you recite the Talbiyah aloud:

Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, laa shareeka lak.

Meaning: “Here I am, O Allah, here I am. You have no partner. Surely all praise, grace and sovereignty belong to You.”

Once in Ihram, cutting hair or nails, wearing perfume, and marital relations are all prohibited.

Tawaf: Seven Circuits of the Ka’bah

Walk seven times around the Ka’bah in an anticlockwise direction. Begin and end at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Men drape the Ihram over the left shoulder only during Tawaf (this is called Idtiba). Make personal duas as you walk. There is no single fixed supplication required for each circuit.

Sa’i: Walking Between Safa and Marwa

After Tawaf, walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa. Start at Safa and finish at Marwa. This act recalls Hajar (AS) searching for water for her son Ismail (AS), and it is one of the most emotionally powerful parts of the journey for many pilgrims.

Halq or Taqsir: Cutting the Hair

Men shave the head completely (Halq) or trim at least one inch of hair (Taqsir). Women trim a small portion from the ends of their hair. This act releases you from the state of Ihram and marks the completion of Umrah.

What to Pack for December Umrah?

Pack for warm days, cool nights, and long hours on your feet. That combination is what December Umrah in Makkah actually requires.

    • Ihram garments for men, and comfortable loose modest clothing for women (including a spare set)
    • A light jacket or cardigan (the Haram is air-conditioned and evenings outside can be cool)
    • Slip-on sandals with support (you will walk miles on marble, so comfort matters more than style)
    • A small backpack for daily use inside the Haram
    • Reusable water bottle (Zamzam water is freely available throughout)
    • Unscented soap, shampoo, and toiletries only (perfume is prohibited while in Ihram)
    • Printed copies of your visa, passport photo page, and booking confirmation
    • Prescription medication with a translated GP letter if required

Mistakes That Cost UK Pilgrims Time and Money

We see every December, and all of them are avoidable.

Booking too late. By November, the hotels closest to the Haram are gone or priced significantly higher. Book as early as possible if you can.

Picking the cheapest hotel without checking distance. A saving of £200 on accommodation can mean an extra 30 minutes of walking every single day. Do the maths on that over seven days.

Arriving without knowing the rituals. Confusion at the Miqat is stressful and avoidable. Spend one hour reading or watching a guide before you travel.

Leaving the visa too late. Processing takes up to 10 working days. Add weekends and bank holidays and that window shrinks fast in December.

Wrong footwear. Thin flip-flops on hard marble floors for three or four hours daily leads to real pain by day two. Supportive slip-on sandals are worth every penny.

How Much Does Christmas Umrah Cost from the UK?

Prices depend on three things: where you fly from, how close your hotel is to the Haram, and how early you book.

    Package TypeEstimated Cost Per Person
Budget (basic hotel, further from Haram)£800 to £1,200
    Mid-range (3 to 4 star, within 500m)£1,300 to £1,800
Premium (5 star, steps from the Haram)£2,000 to £3,500+

Most packages include Visa fees, flights, hotel, and ground transfers. Vaccinations are usually extra, so factor those in from the start.

But here is the thing people overlook: the biggest cost driver is not the flight. It is the hotel distance. Paying more to stay closer to the Masjid al-Haram means more time in worship and less time on your feet between prayers. For families with young children or elderly parents, that matters a great deal.

Book through an ATOL-protected operator so your money is fully protected. We at Ziyuf Al Rahman only offer ATOL-covered packages for exactly that reason.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, an Umrah visa is required (not a standard Saudi tourist visa). Your operator handles the application. Allow at least three weeks before you travel, because processing takes up to 10 working days and December has fewer working days than usual.

Yes, and December is one of the best times to bring them. The cooler weather makes the walking manageable, schools are already closed, and there is no minimum age for Umrah. Many families tell us it is the trip their children remember most.

We recommend a minimum of seven nights. That covers travel recovery, the rituals themselves, time in the Haram, and ideally a few days in Madinah (which we strongly encourage alongside Makkah).

December is a peak period, so yes, prices are higher than quieter months like February. That said, booking in September rather than November closes most of that gap. And when your whole family is already free, the timing is hard to beat.

Saudi Arabia now allows women aged 45 and above to travel for Umrah in an organised group without a Mahram. Women under 45 still require one. Confirm the current rules with your operator before booking, as Saudi policy on this has evolved and may continue to do so.

Hold on to what you come back with. The first weeks home are often the hardest. Keep your salah consistent, stay close to Qur’an, and talk about the experience with family who did not travel. The intention to return again is itself rewarded.
